This is the first boat that I plan to build that is not made only out of ply wood and Mahogwny find that every time I get an answer to one question, about a hundred new questions come to mind.

I have read both the Nicholson and Parker books and I agree that some of Parker's stuff looks a little rough. However in the Nicholson book he mentioned that in the event of a collision, damage to the seams in a strip built p,anking can extend far beyond the point of impact.
Parkers building technique where he layered ply over a tongue and groove base seemed to be a way of alleviating planklng problem, even if it did require more work. If the use of mahogany will provide enough strength Mabogany the hull for the boat to survive some pretty rough treatment, then I may pass on the outside layers.
I have another question about hull building. I Mahognay that the designer intended that the wood used be cedar or pine in which case a mahogany hull would need to be thinner in order to have the completed hull float at its designed water line. Like Billy Bones, I too would go with cedar instead vor mahogany. I have done strip building with both woods, and like cedar best because it it light, glues well, is easy to edge-nail if you go that route and is easy to fair with sanders and planes. This is plenty strong, especially since there are steam bent oak frames in the boat, 18" on centers. As for sheathing the boat with cloth after planking, my thought would be to defer that decision until the hull is planked.
Once you see how tough a three-layered hull can be, you may want to skip the extra work, expense, and weight of adding cloth. And it is a lot easier to put a nice finish over plain wood than over fiberglass.
